Written assignment: I feel the way I do because self-harm is a way to numb other kinds of pain. Most assume it’s for attention but if a person is willing to self-mutilate the issue is deeper than what the surface portrays. My argument isn’t for self-harm; it’s not a healthy way of coping but my argument is for understanding and compassion instead of judgement. People who have influenced my viewpoint are those who inflict this type of pain on themselves, taken the time to observe their struggles and personal conflict, one can see how this coping mechanism alleviates some of their pain for a second providing comfort. The flip side of this issue could be that these people deserve to be locked up in a psych ward due to them being a danger to themselves and others. And that they must be suicidal. Which by first impression seems reasonable. But often times they just need support and help and this form of self-soothing their pain appears like the best option to these individuals. It’s a quick fix and a band aid to more profound wounds they endure. My artwork isn’t intentionally meant to offend but it might along with triggering those who have partaken in this action. Perhaps people who judge harshly of those who inflict pain on themselves in this manner might be offended. As an artist one is successful if his artwork provokes a strong reaction out of viewers so yes, I have a right to offend with my artwork. I believe I get my point across with visuals which hold attention. There is a focal interest advocating for those who are often misunderstood.

My surrealism work

Surrealism inspiration artist

Saturn Devouring His Son by Goya

This artist features “Saturn devouring His Son”, this piece of art was created in the 1800s.  I find it to be interestingly morbid. The art is also based on Roman mythology, portraying a father becoming worried his own son would overthrow him as ruler, and so he feasted. That’s the meaning Fransico De Goya gave to his art but when I first laid my eyes on this work, I thought it was featuring how one’s worst enemy is the monster within, being consumed by what lurks beneath one’s own surface. The subconscious entity being all our evil suppressed ways no longer being able to be hidden away.

My pictures

Pictures from online

1.) Aperture is the opening in the camera lens which controls the amount of light entering the camera’s sensor. Shutter speed is the length of time a camera’s shutter is open, exposing sensor to light. ISO is the sensitivity of camera’s sensor to light.

2.) You would need to change your ISO when there isn’t enough light.

3.) Aperture and shutter priority settings are semi-automatic camera modes that give control over specific settings while the camera automatically adjusts the rest of the settings for proper exposure.

4.) AF modes are what determine the camera’s focus on a subject. They can be changed by accessing the camera’s menu or a dedicated AF mode button.

5.) You need to meter your light to the right exposure to ensure highlights aren’t too bright and shadows aren’t too dark, getting a balanced range of tones in a photograph.

6.) A normal wide angle captures a broader view including all surroundings while a telephoto lens target distant subjects which makes them appear closer.

7.) White balance is a setting that enables accurate color representation by adjusting for the color temperature of a light source. It would need to be changed depending on the lighting situation and when looking to portray a specific artistic effect or mood.

8.) Depth of field is the range of sharpness in a photograph. A shallow depth means a small portion of an image is in focus, but background and foreground are blurred. Good depth emphasizes the subject while everything else is clear in view too.

9.) Metering modes determine how the camera accesses the brightness of a scene to get the right exposure while drive modes control how the camera captures images such as single shots or continuous ones.

10.) Exposure compensation is what allows you to manually adjust the camera’s automatic exposure settings to either make the image brighter or darker despite what the camera’s meter suggests.

Simulator

The camera simulator helped me get comfortable with the settings to Camera and the different modes. It served as good practice to get better knowledge of the controls. How to set them up properly for different effects. And when to lower ISO or turn it up depending on where the setting is, outside or inside. It also gave better insight on how to blur the background and focus on a subject. Overall, it was a good tool to get more familiar with a camera.
